Becoming an ISSA is a growing experience that will help you develop your leadership, professional, intercultural communication skills. Being an international ambassador is a great way to build your resume and demonstrate your maturity, excellence, and abilities to future employers. We encourage you to consider making it a part of your story!
International Ambassador selection is a competitive process. Ambassadors are selected each year to serve for one academic year. Please find the eligibility requirements and application process below. The mentor application for 2025-2026 will open later this year.
ISSA Mission
We aim to guide the successful social, cultural, and academic adjustment of IU Indianapolis students from all over the world. The ISSA equips international students with the knowledge, support system, and tools to prosper at IU Indianapolis and in the US.
The ISSA team accomplishes this mission through pre-arrival assistance, one on one mentoring, social opportunities, and cultural programming.
Service Learning Area
Orientation and Welcome:
Welcome and Orientation mentors will often be the first IU Indianapolis students that new incoming international students meet! They communicate with students while abroad and assist them upon arrival.
- Responsibilities:
- Provide support and a welcoming presence at the IND airport
- Assist with move-in (when appropriate)
- Support and staff International Welcome Weeks
- Resolve general issues with getting settled
- Serve as a resource for students, friends, and families during Orientation
- Encourage students to choose IUI
Marketing and Event Planning
Marketing and Event planning ambassadors are pivotal to the promotion and recruitment process of ISSA.
- Responsibilities:
- Advise on the marketing and promotional strategy for the ISSA
- Develop marketing to promote ISSA
- Staff promotion tables
- Collaborate with OIA's Communications team to create OIA promotional materials
- Planning the beginning-of-the-year Kick-Off and end-of-the-year Celebration events
Careers and Connections
Careers and connections mentors are the ongoing change makers to support our mentee population all year.
- Responsibilities:
- Plan professional, career-focused workshops and events
- Collaborate with OIA's Career Programming Committee
- Serve on panels with topics to include career pathways, Global Voices, and international student support
- Analyze the international student populations on campus to determine what programming to provide
- Creatively engage all international students on campus, especially graduate and professional students
